What is IntraLase LASIK Eye Surgery?

IntraLase LASIK is the name of an innovative laser technology that is used for eye surgery. The laser creates microscopic bubbles with small pulses of laser light to make a cut in the cornea instead of a blade. Each laser pulse takes a minuscule fraction of a second at a programmed depth within the cornea. The IntraLase LASIK flap creation is done within a few seconds for each eye and the whole procedure takes just minutes.

Both IntraLase and LASIK shape the interior layers of the cornea with an excimer laser, but before this can be done, the surgeon creates a flap to be able to access the inner layers of the eye. To create the flap, a blade is used for LASIK treatment while IntraLase uses a laser to make the cut, which makes IntraLase the first eye surgery that uses only laser. The pulses of light, in most cases, result in fewer complications.

The IntraLase procedure uses an infrared beam of light to create the flap from below the surface of the cornea. This beam of light focuses on a point in the cornea where a row of minuscule bubbles is formed. The bubbles are then precisely situated to mark out the flap’s shape and provide a beveled edge, which is important because it gives a secure and tight fit that will not slip or shift around, as was the case with traditional LASIK surgery. After the laser surgery, the flap is placed back into position. The flap can be precisely repositioned because of the beveled edge.

IntraLase has gotten rid of all the risks associated with cutting the cornea with a blade. In general, laser eye surgery has a very low complication rate and with IntraLase, any possibility of complications is reduced even more
