Dr. Reena Patel: Not Your Average Eye Doctor

Ophthalmology is a specialty of medicine that deals with the treatment of eye disease and trauma, including surgical procedures. Ophthalmologists are also fully trained in optometry, which is the prescribing of corrective lenses. Due to this unique set of skills, an ophthalmologist is uniquely qualified to handle any eye issue that arises. With that said, not all ophthalmologists are in general practice. Some, like Dr. Reena Patel, take their training to the next level and specialize in specific surgical procedures. If you are looking for an eye doctor who is above all the rest, look no further than Dr. Reena Patel at Wichita Vision Institute.

Educational Excellence

Dr. Patel completed her undergraduate studies in biology at Northwestern University in just three years. This means she satisfied all of her course requirements a year earlier than would be commonly expected. She then attended the University of Nebraska Medical Center to earn her MD. While enrolled in her MD program, she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society. Her research thesis also received honors. Throughout her entire educational career, Dr. Patel won scholarships and accolades for excellence in academics.

Post-Graduation Learning

A doctor’s education doesn’t end after earning their MD, and Dr. Patel took strides to further her education after leaving the classroom behind. First, she completed her internship at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Scottsdale, Arizona. Next, she completed a residency at Tulane in New Orleans, where she served as the acting chief resident for a period of five months.

Training for Specialization

As Dr. Patel specializes in working with cataract and LASIK patients, she sought out specialized education in both procedures. Dr. Patel finished a cornea fellowship at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, located in Oklahoma City. She was very fortunate to work with the inventor of the LASIK procedure, Dr. Gholam Peyman.

Dr. Patel’s Motivation

Dr. Patel received LASIK vision correction in 1999 after severe allergies made wearing contact lenses nearly impossible and her glasses interfered with her peripheral vision. After surgery, she was astounded by the clarity of vision she had immediately and decided to make this one of her career specialties as an eye doctor. She is uniquely qualified to speak about her experiences with LASIK, both as a patient and a surgeon.

If you or a loved one is considering cataract surgery, LASIK surgery or another eye treatment, Dr. Patel is imminently qualified to advise you of your options for clear, crisp sight. She is anything but your average eye doctor, constantly making strides to provide the absolute best care possible.
