A Closer Look at Intraocular Lenses

If you have a cataract, you will likely benefit from the placement of an intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure replaces the natural lens that is clouded by the cataract with a clear artificial lens. During a consultation with Dr. Patel at Wichita Vision Institute, you can get in-depth answers to any questions you may have about intraocular lenses.

What are the Different Types of IOLs?

Monofocal intraocular lenses, the most common type, can be made for close, medium, or distance vision. Most doctors recommend using distance monofocal IOLs and wearing reading glasses as needed. Multifocal IOLs have zones for both close and distance vision; your brain adjusts to select the correct zone automatically. Accommodative IOLs can switch between clear and distance vision as needed. Toric IOLs are for patients who have astigmatism.

What Should I Expect During Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a minor outpatient procedure that is performed in the comfort of our office. The patient will first be made comfortable through the use of anesthetic eye drops. During this procedure, the clouded lens is carefully and skillfully removed with special instruments. After the natural lens is removed, the IOL is put in its place.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

In the days after the IOL is placed, your vision will begin to improve. You may experience some blurriness as your eye heals, along with some mild discomfort. It is important to follow all of Dr. Patel’s instructions regarding healing for optimal results. As time passes, you’ll likely notice that colors are brighter and vision is sharper than you’re used to. You’ll see Dr. Patel for follow-up visits during that time. Once you have sufficiently healed, you’ll receive a new eyeglass prescription, if needed.

Do Intraocular Lenses Require Maintenance?

After cataract surgery, the IOL becomes a permanent part of your eye. You won’t be able to feel the lens, and no special upkeep is needed.
