iStent Surgery for Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition in which the fluid pressure of the eye builds up to an excess and begins to damage the optic nerves, leading to eye strain and loss of vision. Prescription eye drops can be used to help lower levels of intraocular pressure, but over time, they can cause side effects like itchiness and fatigue.

For patients seeking out a safer and more efficient solution for Glaucoma, Dr. Reena Patel in Wichita, Kansas proudly offers iStent®, an optical implant that can provide long-lasting relief for excess eye pressure with no maintenance required.

If Glaucoma has been standing in the way of proper sight, contact us at our office in Wichita and ask about iStent® Surgery. We look forward to helping you bring back ease and clarity to your vision.

What is iStent®?  What’s the Procedure and Recovery Like?

Glaucoma causes by increased fluid pressure inside the eye; this fluid pressure builds up because of blockages in the Trabecular Meshwork, the tissue responsible for draining fluid from the eye.  iStent® is a surgical implant that bypasses those blockages, allowing for fluid to be properly drained into the Schlemm’s Canal, which helps to reduce intraocular pressure by a great amount.

iStent® should be implanted during conventional cataract surgery. This is because the implant can be placed into the eye using the same incisions already required for the removal of cataracts.

A patient can return home to rest upon completion of the procedure. Anti-Inflammatory eye drops can be used to help speed up the rate of recovery. Taking a few days off from work to rest is recommended to help decrease recovery time. Strenuous activity like heavy lifting should be avoided because it can increase eye pressure.

Why Choose iStent®?

As opposed to the many treatments which only treat the symptoms of Omni Glaucoma, iStent® addresses the root cause. By creating a new pathway for the drainage of fluid, iStent® can help patients to get off of prescription eye drops and other medications that can lead to harmful side effects with long-term use.
