Dr. Patel was recently the recipient of the American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award with Commendation for 2013-2016. The three-year award is given to those physicians who demonstrate an exemplary commitment to continuing medical education. Continuing medical education allows Dr. Patel to stay updated on new medical advancements and technologies so that she can bring state-of-the-art medical care to her patients. She received the award based on her commitment to patient care through continuing medical education as well as her professional competence. Dr. Patel was honored to be recognized for her dedication and achievement. This was the second three-year award that Dr. Patel has received from the American Medical Association. On the evening of July 4, Dr. Patel received an emergency call about a local man who had been injured when a firework exploded in his face, blinding and deafening him. Shrapnel lodged itself in his eyes, cheeks and forehead and his eyes were swollen shut when he arrived in excruciating pain at Wichita Vision Institute. Dr. Patel had to perform several procedures to remove gunpowder from his corneas, and the man could have suffered serious vision loss. He was not the only one harmed by a firework, as Wichita fire officials received about 70 calls that day for firework-related injuries. At a recent WVI anniversary open house, Dr. Reena Patel was awarded a Distinguished 10 year Service Citation by the City of Wichita. The award and a commemorative coin were presented to Dr. Patel by local councilman Jeff Longwell.
