What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration is a type of vision loss caused by the gradual erosion of the macula, which is the central part of the retina. It affects over ten million people in the US – more than the number of people affected by glaucoma and cataracts put together. As such, it is the most common cause of vision loss, especially in Caucasians who are over 65.
There are two types of macular degeneration: wet and dry. The dry form is the most common type and affects about 90 percent of patients. In the dry form, light-sensitive cells in the macula start to break down and gradually cause vision loss. In the wet form, which can develop far more rapidly, abnormal new blood vessels develop under the macula and leak fluids that kill the retinal cells.
While there is no cure for either type of macular degeneration, there are treatments that can slow it down, and there are many diagnostic procedures that can detect it and determine the extent of the vision loss.
